Chett was born around [[Hag's Mire]]. His father collected leeches and sold them to [[maester]]s. Chett learned the trade from his father. He was an ugly boy and so girls did not take interest in him. He picked flowers for a girl named [[Bessa]] who had a reputation of not being picky but she spurned and insulted him. Chett got so angry that he killed her. For this he was sent to the [[Wall]].

Chett takes care of the dogs on the great ranging beyond the Wall. He and Lark the Sisterman come upon Jon Snow when he is talking to one of Craster's wives.[3] Jon later heard Lark and him talking about mutiny.[4]

During the expedition to look for Benjen Stark and Ser Waymar Royce, Chett conspired with other brothers to desert. To make sure they would not be caught they would have to kill some of their Night's Watch brothers:

  • Lord Commander Jeor Mormont to let command go to Ser Ottyn Wythers whom they expect to withdraw to the wall instead of going after the deserters.
  • Blane an officer of the Shadow Tower
  • Grubbs and Aethan; the men who had drawn watch
  • Dywen and Bannen to prevent the deserter from being tracked
  • And Samwell Tarly to prevent a (raven-)message of the desertion and killing reaching the Wall.
